Dionex Corp., a San Jose maker of analytical instruments, will sell and distribute directly in Japan, one of the last countries where it sells through distributors.

The change will result in a pretax charge of about $900,000 in the fourth quarter.

The company has agreed to buy certain assets from its former Japanese distributor, including $250,000 worth of Dionex inventory, for $1.3 million.

After the change, about 90% of Dionex sales worldwide will be through its own direct sales force.
