THE SIDELINES : Turin Girds for Unruly Crowd
City authorities, police officers and English crowd control experts met today to set up security measures to control troublemakers at the World Cup semifinal between West Germany and England.
Turin authorities estimated that 40,000 German supporters and 18,000 English fans will come to the city for Wednesday’s game between two of Europe’s soccer superpowers.
Police officers indicated all fans arriving in the northern city will be searched for items that could be used as weapons. Also, alcohol sales will be banned on the day of the match.
German and English fans will be escorted to the stadium and directed to separate sections of the stadium, which holds 80,000 people.
Police sources said more than 5,000 riot policemen will be mobilized for the game.
West Germany qualified by defeating Czechoslovakia 1-0 in Milan on Sunday, while England struggled to a 3-2 extra-time victory against Cameroon in Naples.
