I think it’s a triumph of the American people, of the jurors, to set aside all those things that there’s no question they’ve read in the papers, heard on the radio, on television, and to judge the case based solely on the evidence. And I think they did this.

They focused on the evidence presented and they disregarded whatever personal feelings they had. They were able to separate what is proof as opposed to what is suspicion or gossip.

I think the average person does not understand that a verdict of “not guilty” is not a verdict of innocence. The focus of the jurors is, “Did the people present sufficient evidence to convince us?”

(Defense lawyer) Gerry Spence looked at the evidence presented by the prosecution and was convinced that the jurors would not find guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. The defense rested and relied on the state of the evidence. It’s good lawyering, because had (Imelda Marcos) taken the witness stand, she probably would have been cross-examined.
