Hollywood : Grants for Landmarks

Share

The city’s Community Redevelopment Agency has set aside $350,000 as part of an effort to preserve historically and architecturally significant buildings in Hollywood.

Although few details of the program have been finalized, the CRA is considering awarding $50,000 or more in matching grants to developers. Those who want to renovate “buildings that would have a major impact on Hollywood Boulevard” because of their size and proximity to other landmarks will get first priority, according to Lester Burg, assistant project manager for the $922-million Hollywood Redevelopment Project.

Burg also said buildings located within the core of the redevelopment project, in the Hollywood Boulevard District, will get first priority for funding.

The proposal, included in the CRA’s budget for the fiscal year that started July 1, follows a decision by the agency to increase the number of buildings that can be protected under its historic preservation guidelines.

The $350,000 program was proposed by the Hollywood Community Advisory Council, a citizens advisory group appointed by Councilman Michael Woo.

“The program represents a significant step by the redevelopment agency in preserving and protecting the most significant buildings in Hollywood,” Burg said.
