New EPA Drinking Water Limits: About 2,300 water systems around the country serving 2 million people will have to spend an additional $87 million to test for and control 24 substances under a proposal by the Environmental Protection Agency. Sulfate, which can cause stomach upset and diarrhea in adults and dehydration in infants, has the widest health impact, though the other 24 substances include nine possible or probable cancer-causing agents. Sulfate causes an estimated 105,000 cases of travelers’ diarrhea each year in the United States, EPA officials said.
