WORLD : 10,000 Attacked in Albania
Police armed with truncheons today attacked thousands of pro-democracy demonstrators in the center of Albania’s capital, the Austria Press Agency reported.
The sketchy report said about 10,000 demonstrators gathered in a central square to demand that the leadership of the last hard-line Communist nation in Eastern Europe adopt major reforms. No injuries were immediately reported.
Police repeatedly charged the demonstrators and hundreds of spectators, who scattered only to regroup moments later, according to the news agency, whose reporter is one of the few foreign correspondents in Albania.
The clash occurred in Skanderbeg Square, not far from a sealed off area of the capital, Tirana, where hundreds of Albanians are holed up in foreign embassies seeking permission to leave Albania.
