MISSION VIEJO : City Hoping to Be Computerized Soon

Share

Barring any last-minute glitches, a new $200,000 computer system will be installed in City Hall next week, officials said.

The system will include 36 personal computers and a central data-storage unit.

“The new computers will enhance the productivity of our staff and improve our service to the public,” said City Manager Fred Sorsabal.

Addressing what city officials say is a growing need in City Hall for automated record-keeping, the City Council voted to award a contract for the equipment last month.

Known as the Citywide Local Area Network, the package includes an electronic mail system which will link City Hall to the city’s Oso Viejo Community Center several miles away, automatically sending messages and transmitting documents five times daily.

“The (electronic mail) connection to the community center will allow information to be transferred between the two city facilities quickly without requiring city staff to make deliveries,” Sorsabal said.

The computer network is the first phase of an overall information-systems plan, he said. Officials also hope to improve or develop financial-management programs and reorganize Mission Viejo’s land records within the year.
