This 1985 release is a very special, rather wonderful film, one that turns upon the sentimental notion that Alice Liddell Hargreaves (a splendid Coral Browne, above), now in her 80s and in the course of a brief, unexpectedly hectic stay in Manhattan to mark the centenary of the birth of Lewis Carroll, whom she inspired to write “Alice in Wonderland,” comes at last to appreciate this strange man whose real name was Rev. Charles Dodgson (Ian Holm). With some of the late Jim Henson’s most whimsical creatures.
