The California Youth Authority has named Manuel Carbajal superintendent of the Ventura School in Camarillo.

Carbajal will replace former Supt. Sylvester Carraway, who died of a heart attack in April. Carbajal will begin work July 23 at the 800-bed youth facility on Wright Road, spokeswoman Sarah Andrade said.

Carbajal is currently superintendent of the Karl Holton School in Stockton, a position he has held since 1988.

He began his career with the California Youth Authority in 1969 as a social worker at the Fred C. Nelles School in Whittier. He later was promoted to parole agent and worked his way up through the ranks before becoming assistant superintendent of the DeWitt Nelson Training Center in Stockton in 1985, Andrade said.

Carbajal, who holds a master’s degree in social work from UCLA, was one of five California Youth Authority managerial appointments recently announced by Director C. A. Terhune.

The CYA is the largest youthful offender agency in the nation, providing services to 8,236 youngsters in 10 institutions and five camps. The youth authority also oversees 6,128 parolees.

Ventura School is one of the three largest youth facilities in the state.
