East Germany’s fallen Communist regime had links with all known guerrilla groups in Europe and the Middle East, East Berlin’s interior minister said in an interview Sunday in the West German newspaper Die Welt.

Peter-Michael Diestel said the country’s former leaders, toppled in a peaceful uprising last year, had contacts with the Irish Republican Army, the Basque separatist movement ETA and other groups.

Eight suspected members of the West German Red Army Faction guerrilla organization have been arrested recently in East Germany amid revelations of East Berlin’s former ties with the group.
