A surprised Chip Hanauer took advantage of favored Miss Budweiser’s first-lap mishap and drove the Miss Circus Circus to victory in the Madison Regatta for unlimited hydroplanes at Madison, Ind.
Tom D’Eath’s Miss Budweiser, winner of 13 of the previous 15 heats of competition this season, grabbed the lead at the start but hit a wave in the rough Ohio River going through the second turn and lifted off the water.
By the time he came down, Hanauer had ducked inside for the lead and stayed in front for the rest of the five-lap race.
Hanauer averaged 126.516 m.p.h. for the five laps. Despite some damage to his boat, D’Eath finished second at 121.028 m.p.h.
