THE SIDELINES : Jaite Advances in Swiss Open
Third-seeded Martin Jaite of Argentina defeated West Germany’s Markus Zoecke 7-5, 6-4 today in the first round of the Swiss Open tennis tournament.
Jaite needed 90 minutes to oust the unseeded Zoecke in an error-laced match, although the outcome never seemed in doubt after the first set.
Soviet ace Andrei Chesnokov, the No. 4 seed, fell behind in the first set against Andrei Cherkassov, then struggled to down his compatriot 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).
In opening-round matches between unseeded players, Alberto Mancini of Argentina was beaten by Spain’s Sergei Bruguera 6-3, 6-4.
