The train ride between San Diego and Orange counties should be a bit smoother soon as the result of the California Transportation Commission’s decision Wednesday to improve tracks in those counties.

Transportation commissioners approved a $7.5-million funding allocation to replace the 45-year-old rail lines used for passenger service between Fullerton and San Diego, said Caltrans spokeswoman Mariana Mejia.

The work represents the final phase of a project to renovate the commuter line between San Diego and Santa Barbara, Mejia said.

“The Los-Angeles-San Diego corridor is the second most popular rail line in the country,” Mejia said. “This project will improve the quality of the ride, and it will improve Amtrak’s service.”

Caltrans estimates that 1.7 million to 2 million passengers will use that route this year, said another Caltrans spokeswoman, Lisa Covington. Money for the improvements will come from revenue generated by the recently passed state gasoline tax increase.
