A special court today awarded former Atty. Gen. Edwin Meese III $460,509 for legal bills incurred during the time he was the subject of an independent counsel’s investigation.

The independent counsel division of the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals here disallowed $115,088 worth of expenses claimed by Meese’s defense attorneys, including more than $16,000 for time his lawyers spent responding to reporters’ questions.

Between May, 1987, and July, 1988, Meese was the subject of an independent counsel’s investigation into allegations that he violated federal ethics laws by helping Wedtech Corp. obtain a defense contract.

The investigation by independent counsel James McKay did not result in any criminal charges. McKay reported that he found potential tax violations by Meese but declined to prosecute him. Meese left office about a month later.
