A hailstorm pelted the Denver area, shattering windows, stripping leaves from trees and bruising about four dozen amusement park patrons stranded on rides by a power failure, officials said today.

The University of Denver reported about 750 windows broken, mostly on the north sides of buildings, the direction from which the storm came.

Aaron and Sarah Creer were riding a Ferris wheel at Elitch’s Gardens amusement park in northwest Denver when the hailstorm hit Wednesday.

“I was just praying,” said Aaron, 15. He said he wrapped his arms around his sister, 9, to protect her head and her glasses from the pounding ice.

Patrons at the amusement park received mostly bumps, bruises, welts and cuts. Forty-seven of those injured were taken to hospitals but most were treated and released.
