Marcelo Gumucio, president and chief operating officer of Cray Research Inc., has resigned from both positions at the supercomputer maker.

Cray Chairman and Chief Executive John A. Rollwagen said for the “foreseeable future” he will assume Gumucio’s responsibilities in addition to his current duties.

Rollwagen said in a letter to employees that he and Gumucio “were unable to agree” on how the Minneapolis company should be run.

“Basically I guess you could say my style is more intuitive, more informal, maybe a little freer,” said Rollwagen, who believes that it pays off in creativity. That style contrasted with Gumucio’s, which he called more formal.

Gumucio, who also resigned from the Cray board, could not be reached for comment. He joined the company in 1983 as executive vice president-marketing, becoming president in 1988.

Cray suffered a slump in 1989, with sales up just 4% to $784.7 million and earnings declining 43% to $89 million.

In April, however, Cray reported that its first-quarter profit totaled $9.5 million, compared to $1.5 million for the same period in 1989. The company also said it expected a profit increase for the year.
