From Times Staff and Wire Reports

U.S. opposition to the forced repatriation of Vietnamese “boat people” is endangering a two-year-old international agreement on the issue, diplomats in Asia said. A key meeting on the issue, scheduled to take place in Geneva next week, has been postponed for a third time because Vietnam and Malaysia both asked for more time to consult on developments. An official with the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees called the delay “very dangerous” and said risks are growing that countries near Vietnam will refuse to allow boat people to land on their shores.
