Red Wings Replace Demers With Former Capital Coach Murray
The Detroit Red Wings fired Jacques Demers as coach Friday and hired former Washington Capital coach Bryan Murray to be both coach and general manager.
Murray, 47, had guided the Capitals to the playoffs in seven of his nine full seasons, but his team never advanced past the second round. He was fired and replaced by his younger brother, Terry, in January.
In four seasons under Demers, the Red Wings qualified three times for the playoffs, advancing twice to the semifinals before losing both times to the Edmonton Oilers. Last season, the Red Wings finished last in the Norris Division with 70 points.
