From Times staff and Wire reports

Explosions rocked a hotel and a private home in the Johannesburg area, killing one man, seriously damaging the buildings and bearing the hallmarks of right-wing terrorism, police said. The bombings ended a weeklong lull in urban terrorism blamed on white extremists opposed to racial reform. The first blast ripped through the Willie Smith Hotel--known as a gathering place for liberal students--killing a 50-year-old waiter. The second blast hit the home of a right-wing activist recently released from police detention.
