Mark Gastineau, former New York Jet player now with the British Columbia Lions, was ejected from his first game in the Canadian Football League after a helmet-swinging brawl on the way to the dressing room at halftime Friday night.
Doug Flutie, another former NFL performer in his first CFL game, threw a 37-yard touchdown pass to Ray Alexander with one-second left in overtime to give the Lions a 38-38 tie with the Calgary Stampeders.
Gastineau, 33, was the center of an altercation with Dan Wicklum, a reserve linebacker for Calgary. At one point, Gastineau ripped the helmet from Wicklum’s head and smashed it on the artificial turf, splitting the headgear.
Several times before halftime, Gastineau got into shoving matches with Calgary players.
