Former Dodger Mike Marshall’s days as a New York Met probably are about to end.

Marshall was hospitalized Saturday because of a possible bleeding ulcer, one day after he and Manager Bud Harrelson had a loud clubhouse argument.

Although Marshall’s diagnosis was not definite Saturday night, Harrelson began making personnel plans in case Marshall is placed on the disabled list or traded. Harrelson indicated that Marshall probably will go on the disabled list because “time will be needed to correct the problem, and more time would be needed thereafter.” But he also indicated that a trade was “being worked on.”

Harrelson said little about Friday’s confrontation, saying only that the situation had been “resolved and solved;” that he could not recall a louder clubhouse argument in his long tenure with the team, and that Marshall had been angry about not starting in the second game of Thursday night’s doubleheader against Cincinnati Red left-hander Danny Jackson.

But players characterized the exchange as “shocking” and “ugly.” One player said Harrelson and Marshall exchanged obscenities and quoted Harrelson as saying, “What are you gonna do, hit me?” “They were pretty hot,” the player said. “Buddy yelled at him, ‘If you don’t want to play for me, take off the uniform and go home.” According to the player, the argument ended quickly after the two moved their meeting from Harrelson’s office to the clubhouse.

Marshall was hospitalized after undergoing tests early Saturday afternoon. Additional tests are scheduled for today.
