Solidarity supporters of Polish Prime Minister Tadeusz Mazowiecki formed a political party today, sealing their break with union leader Lech Walesa.

Zbigniew Bujak and Wladyslaw Frasyniuk, underground Solidarity leaders in the fight against communism in the 1980s, were appointed joint leaders of the new Citizens Movement-Democratic Action.

“We are forming this movement to strengthen Polish democracy and create conditions for the country’s civilization to develop and to oppose the dangers caused by economic recession, social unrest and extremism which is appearing in the Solidarity camp,” the party’s founding declaration said.
