Ford Motor Co., concerned about a slow sales start for its highly touted 1991 Ford Escort, is offering a rebate package on the subcompact car until Aug. 8.

“They’re off to a bit of a slow start,” Ford spokesman Bill Carroll said. “We felt they needed a bit of a stimulus.”

Consumers who never have owned a Ford before can receive $500 toward the purchase of an Escort, built in Michigan; its sister car, the Mercury Tracer, assembled in Hermosillo, Mexico; or the Mercury Capri, imported from Australia. The purchase must be financed through Ford Motor Credit Co.

Ford also is offering dealers $200 to $500 for each Escort or Tracer sold. The company also said it would offer a $50 coupon to anyone test driving an Escort or Tracer.
