Ozzie Canseco, the twin of Oakland slugger Jose Canseco, has been called up from the Athletics’ AA team to play alongside his brother.

Huntsville Stars Manager Jeff Newman told Canseco Tuesday night that Oakland Manager Tony La Russa wanted him to join the American League West leaders.

Canseco, 26, got word of the promotion following his 19th home run of the season for the Southern League team, a club record for career homers.

Canseco had 34 homers in his career with the Stars, nine more than his brother Jose hit in 1985, and one more than the old record-holder, Terry Steinbach had in 1985-86.

“I’ve been in the minor leagues since 1983,” said Ozzie, “and just to go up there (Oakland) and be a part of the team without being a spectator . . . it’s just an unbelievable feeling.”

Canseco leaves Huntsville, where he first joined the team in 1988, with a .229 batting average, including 11 homers and 21 RBI in the past 22 games.
