UAW, GM Open Talks on New Labor Contract: Kicking off what promises to be long talks between the Big Three auto makers and the nation’s largest industrial union, General Motors and the United Auto Workers officially opened negotiations on a new national labor agreement. GM is the first auto maker to begin negotiations with the UAW on a new three-year labor pact covering about 330,000 active and laid-off workers at the world’s largest auto maker. The Big Three auto makers will be negotiating pacts covering 500,000 active and laid-off UAW members. Current national agreements are set to expire Sept. 14.
