TUSTIN : Council to Send Note Backing Air Station

Share

The City Council has voted unanimously to send a letter to the U.S. Secretary of Defense in support of the Tustin Marine Corps Helicopter Air Station.

Mayor Richard B. Edgar said he disagreed with the Irvine City Council, which last week authorized its mayor to write to Defense Secretary Dick Cheney asking him to remove helicopter operations from the Tustin station. The Irvine council cited noise and safety concerns.

The Irvine council also authorized letters to the Pentagon and to county congressional representatives opposing any civilian use of the base.

“To go to the point of saying we think the base should be taken away when it’s been there longer than the city is inappropriate,” Edgar said.

Tustin resident Al Shifberg-Mencher said he applauded the city’s decision to write the letter.

“I believe (the Marines) are excellent members of our community, “ he said, noting that the Marine Corps base supports local events and merchants.
