The Rev. Al Sharpton and an activist associate surrendered to authorities Wednesday to begin serving a 15-day jail sentence. Sharpton and the Rev. Timothy Mitchell, both convicted of disorderly conduct, denounced the “racist criminal justice system” before they turned themselves in.

They were convicted after a non-jury trial for their actions during a “Day of Outrage” demonstration Jan. 27, 1988, near La Guardia Airport.
