Artists’ Group Sets Two Fund-Raisers

The Los Angeles Coalition for Freedom of Expression is holding two benefit programs this weekend as part of its Festival of Freedom. Proceeds from the events will go toward the group’s efforts on behalf of unrestricted National Endowment for the Arts funding. Tickets for both events are $10.

“Obscene . . . With Merit,” a performance and video program with works challenging the current restrictions of artists’ freedom of expression will be held tonight at 8 at West Hollywood’s EZTV, 8547 Santa Monica Blvd., (213) 657-1532. Artists performing or presenting videos include Wendell Jones, John Greyson, Chris Robbins, Robert Beck, Azian Nurudin, Catherine Saalfield and Zoe Leonard, Sheree Rose, Richard Brennan, David Stanley and Scott Shatt.

On Sunday, also at 8 p.m., several performances grouped under the title “Eye of the Storm: Artists Challenge the Obscenity Restrictions, the Religious Right and Censorship,” will be presented at Venice’s Beyond Baroque Literary Arts Center, 681 Venice Blvd., (213) 822-3006. Performers include Ayofemi Folayan, Robin Podolsky, Janice Porter-Moffett, Alan Pulner, Linda Sibio, Matias Viegener and Curtis York.
