An explosion rocked a Moscow-bound passenger train in southern Russia, killing five passengers and injuring several others, Soviet media reported today.

The cause of the blast, which occurred about midnight Thursday between the second and third passengers cars of the train, was under investigation, Tass news agency said.

The explosion occurred on the Matveyev Kurgan-Zakadychnoye section of the Donetsk railway line in southern Russia, just south of the Ukrainian border near the Sea of Azov, the government newspaper Izvestia said. The train had departed Thursday from Tshkaltubo in the republic of Georgia.
