Cypress Parish Hosting Beginners’ Bible Study

St. Irenaeus Parish Adult Education is sponsoring a three-week Bible study for beginners on Tuesdays beginning next weekg, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., at the Parish Adult Education Building, 5201 Evergreen Ave., Cypress. The series offers an overview of the Scriptures and examines how to study the Bible and use the Scriptures in prayer. The course provides those who have had little or no background in the Bible with a foundation for reading and understanding the Bible from a Catholic perspective. Fee is $5 per person. The Rev. Bill Barlett will be installed as pastor of the Lutheran Church of the Cross at 4 p.m. Sunday at 24231 El Toro Road, Laguna Hills. Barlett received his doctorate from Chicago Lutheran Theological Seminary in Maywood, Ill., and has served at All Saints Lutheran Church in Phoenix, Ariz. The Rev. Everett Neilsen will represent the bishop of the synod and preach the sermon and conduct the installation. A dinner will be served following the service. For information, call (714) 837-9926.

The Rev. Howard W. Oliver will be guest speaker Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at the Orange Coast Unitarian Universalist Church, 1259 Victoria St., Costa Mesa. The sermon, entitled “God Talk,” will respond to an Atlantic Monthly article titled “Can We Be Good Without God?” A Harvard graduate, Oliver spent two years at the Harvard Divinity School, received a master’s degree from UCLA in political science, and earned a master’s degree in religion from USC. The Costa Mesa First Forum is presenting a series on “Our Involvement in the Medical Research World,” with a keynote address on “Autoimmune Diseases” to be delivered by Dr. George Chandy of UCI Medical School on Sunday at 7 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 420 W. 19th St., Costa Mesa.
