COSTA MESA : Sixth-Graders Face Switch to Jr. High

Share

Sixth-graders in the Estancia High School area would go to junior high instead of elementary school under a plan that will go before the Newport-Mesa School Board on Tuesday.

Under the proposal developed by the school district’s staff, most grade schools in the zone, including Adams Kindergarten Center and California, Whittier, Pomona and Wilson elementary schools--would be changed to kindergarten through fifth grade. TeWinkle Junior High would be expanded to include sixth-graders.

The plan would affect students beginning in the 1991-92 school year.

The staff will also review enrollment figures to determine if the closed Victoria Elementary School should be reopened in 1993. Projections show that enrollment at all four elementary schools will reach capacity in the next two years.
