Indian leaders rejected government demands that Mohawk gunmen lay down their weapons before peace can be negotiated in conflicts that have erupted on Mohawk reservations in Quebec. The crisis stems from a dispute over ownership of land near a Mohawk reserve. The local town council wanted to use the land to extend a golf course. Indians say the site, about 20 miles west of Montreal, is ancestral land and includes a sacred burial ground.
