There are those of us who think Orson Welles’ 1942 The Magnificent Ambersons (AMC Sunday at 10:30 p.m.), even in its re-cut state, is a greater film than “Citizen Kane.” What’s not in dispute is that the movie is one of the finest American sound films. Stars Tim Holt, Joseph Cotten, Dolores Costello, and, most memorably, Agnes Moorehead. (1:30)

Political dramas are rarely more intoxicating and sexy than Peter Weir’s 1983 The Year of Living Dangerously (TMC Tuesday at 10 p.m.), featuring Mel Gibson and Sigourney Weaver steaming up Indonesia just before Sukarno’s fall. Linda Hunt’s performance (playing a man) won her the Oscar for best supporting actress. (2:00)

Sometimes the elements in a comedy magically fuse and everything clicks. That’s the case with Ron Howard’s 1984 Splash (Disney Channel Friday at 9 p.m.). It’s a mermaid comedy with a great mermaid, Daryl Hannah, and a cast that includes Tom Hanks and, in what remains his finest film work, John Candy. (2:00)

The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (Bravo Friday at 10 p.m.) is the most enjoyable of the great Spanish director Luis Bunuel’s many movies. It’s a Surrealist goof about an interminably interrupted dinner party. Winner of the Oscar for Best Foreign Film of 1972. (2:00)
