A cagey bit of programming worked for NBC in the weekly television ratings, with the conclusion of a two-part movie grabbing the top slot this week and Part 1 scoring high the last time around, it was reported today.

Monday night’s broadcast of Part 2 of “Love and Hate: A Marriage Made in Hell,” starring Kate Nelligan, was the top-rated show in the weekly Nielsen ratings for the week of July 16-22.

Part 1 of the miniseries, broadcast July 15, placed sixth in the ratings for the week of July 9-15. The show’s ratings were the third-highest for all NBC miniseries broadcast this season, following “Blind Faith” and “Drug Wars: The Camarena Story.”

In other good news for NBC, the July 17 special “Real Life with Jane Pauley” tied for fifth place, the highest-ever rating for a network news special. Five “Real Life” specials have been scheduled for the summer.

Reruns of the perennially top-rated “Cheers” (NBC) and “Roseanne” (ABC) were in second and third place respectively and ABC’s “20/20” zipped to fourth place, compared with its 21st place showing a week ago.

It was a three-way pileup in seventh place, with Fox’s “The Simpsons” and “Married . . . With Children” tying with NBC’s “Golden Girls.”

“The Miss Teen USA” pageant broadcast on CBS rounded out the top 10. Some usual top 10 finishers, CBS’s “60 Minutes” and NBC’s “The Cosby Show” and “A Different World,” were bumped to 11th, 12th and 13th places respectively.

A rerun of NBC’s “Quantum Leap” outpaced two original shows in the prime-time race July 18, placing 39th over ABC’s Barbara Walters special “The Perfect Baby” (41st place) and CBS’s “Top Cops” in 43rd place.

NBC won five nights of the week--Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday--its first such showing since Feb. 26. ABC won Friday night and Sunday belonged to CBS.
