Blue Line Continues to Draw High Ridership

The Metro Blue Line began its second week of service with ridership figures far above those projected, transit officials said Monday.

About 62,000 people rode the Los Angeles-to-Long Beach light rail system on Sunday, some 12,000 above the 50,000 figure that was expected, said Greg Davy, spokesman for the Southern California Rapid Transit District.

Daily ridership last week fluctuated between 32,000 and 39,000, Davy said, compared to the 5,000 daily that was initially projected. Total ridership topped the 300,000 mark as of Monday, a spokeswoman said.

Davy said no problems were detected along the 19-mile Blue Line route Monday, one day after a train jumped its tracks in downtown Los Angeles. That mishap, the first derailment on the Blue Line, was caused by a four-inch-long metal wire that lodged in a switching track, he said. No one was injured.
