Malibu : Land Is Now Open Space
More than two-thirds of the Malibu Mar Vista subdivision in Latigo Canyon has been set aside permanently as public open space, officials of the Mountains Restoration Trust said.
Betty Wiechec, executive director of the agency, said that the recent acquisition of 39 lots in the subdivision as part of the Transfer of Development Credit program brings to 88 the number of lots that have been preserved there. The subdivision has 130 lots.
The Mountains Restoration Trust is a private, nonprofit agency that acquires land for public use in the Santa Monica Mountains. As part of the Transfer of Development Credit program, developers buy parcels and donate them for use as open space in return for being allowed to create other subdivided lots elsewhere in the state coastal zone.
Although subdivided in 1927, Malibu Mar Vista is undeveloped. Latigo Canyon Road winds through the subdivision, but most of the lots are on steep slopes and there is no public water system in the area.
