Supreme Court nominee David H. Souter sought assurances that he would not be asked how he would rule on specific issues before he agreed to be screened as a candidate for the high court, Sen. Warren B. Rudman (R-N.H.) said today.

Souter talked with Rudman by telephone after the White House called the New Hampshire judge Sunday night and invited him to Washington for an interview.

A short time later, Souter placed a second call to Rudman, who said the jurist wanted assurances. The senator said he contacted White House Chief of Staff John H. Sununu, who said Souter had nothing to fear.
