NAMES IN THE NEWS : At 80, She’s Still on the Beat
Hard-hitting reporter Sarah McClendon, who has covered every President since Franklin D. Roosevelt, says she’s not letting up now that she’s turned 80.
“I’m not quitting because I have a lot of questions I want to ask George Bush,” she said. The Tyler, Tex., native got congratulations from President Bush and a host of other Washington figures Thursday at a birthday party.
In her nearly 50 years of reporting from Washington, McClendon has become well known for asking Presidents tough questions.
She said her favorite President was fellow Texan Lyndon B. Johnson, even though he once prodded four newspapers to cancel her service.
