S. Korea Opposition Reelects Leader
South Korea’s main opposition party passed a resolution Friday calling for the merger of anti-government groups and unanimously reelected its leader, Kim Dae Jung.
Kim, who was reelected at a national convention of the opposition Party for Peace and Democracy, gave a speech renewing a demand that the National Assembly be dissolved and replaced by a new one through elections.
He said the current National Assembly, controlled by the government party, no longer reflects the wishes of the people.
All 70 lawmakers of Kim’s party and 10 other opposition legislators have submitted resignations protesting disputed legislation passed at a recent National Assembly session.
The more than 1,800 delegates at the convention also adopted a resolution calling for an early merger of anti-government forces and accusing the ruling Democratic Liberal Party of seeking to prolong one-party rule.
