FIGHTING WORDS

Each year, schools within the Division of Adult and Occupational Education of the Los Angeles Unified School District teach more than 350,000 adult students how to improve their English. Often, they go to school after a full day’s work. Most sacrifice cherished time with their families. They see our programs as a way to improve their ability to work, to be a productive part of the community and to be better parents. Unfortunately, a state-imposed limitation on enrollments inhibits our ability to teach thousands more who are waiting to learn.

Your article notes, “Prop. 63 was sold as a symbolic expression of support of English.” Those organizations that tout the English-only dogma would better serve the community by concentrating their efforts on increasing the service capacity of adult schools.
