Nation IN BRIEF : ALASKA : Weather Restrains Massive Wildfires

Cool, moist air tended to restrain the growth of wildfires in central Alaska, officials said, but in eastern Alaska more than 1,000 firefighters continued to battle an 87,800-acre blaze. The total amount of land burned was expected to hit 2.2 million acres today, an area equivalent to three times the size of Rhode Island. Officials at the Interagency Fire Coordination Center said 119 fires were still active.
