NATION : White House Opposes S&L; Panel
A proposal by Democratic governors for a national commission to investigate the savings and loan crisis was rejected today by the White House.
“We do feel it is unnecessary to create another bureaucratic body,” White House Deputy Press Secretary Steven Hart said in Washington.
“We think the best thing to do is to work quickly on the current caseload with the funds and the processes we now have in place which are working,” Hart said. “We feel it’s not time to point fingers, but it’s time to get the money that’s owed to the depositors back in their hands.”
The commission idea was pushed by Democrats in Mobile at the National Governors’ Assn. annual summer conference.
The Democrats also forced Republicans to accept changes in a proposed national education oversight panel made up of governors, members of Congress and White House appointees.
