The Soviet Union and Albania today agreed to normalize relations that were broken off 29 years ago during Moscow’s split with China, Tass news agency reported.

The agreement to re-establish ties and reopen embassies in Moscow and Tirana was reached during talks that were held in Bulgaria in June and in Tirana today, Tass said.

The Soviet delegation was led by Deputy Foreign Minister Yuli Kvitsinsky.

Both sides were guided “by a mutual desire to develop the relations of friendship and cooperation on the basis of sovereignty, equality and non-interference in each other’s internal affairs,” the Tass dispatch said.
