THE SIDELINES : Soccer Player Collapses, Dies
A 35-year-old Mexican soccer player died at a hospital after collapsing during a game, officials said.
Mario Montes de Oca of Mexico City collapsed about five minutes into Sunday’s game, said Marcos Mendoza, president of the Austin Soccer Assn. Mendoza said De Oca “just fell. He just fainted.”
De Oca died about an hour after collapsing, said Dr. Robert Bayardo, Travis County medical examiner. Emergency medical services spokeswoman Sally Muir said witnesses reported De Oca had complained of chest pains Saturday night.
De Oca, a widely known player in Mexico, was a member of the Jalisco team. Jalisco was playing Morelia, an Austin team, when he collapsed.
