Suspect Seized in Wounding of Patrol Officer
A man wanted in the weekend shooting of a California Highway Patrol officer was arrested here after an intensive manhunt, authorities reported.
Jeffrey Shawn Rendall, 29, was arrested Monday for violation of parole, according to a spokesman for the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Department.
Officer Eugene Mulata was shot six times with a .44 Magnum handgun on Saturday, but escaped serious injury because he was wearing a bulletproof vest.
Rendall, of American Canyon, was found in a small complex of buildings after a daylong search, the spokesman said. A second suspect, Matthew Lee Allen, 24, of Vallejo, may have been in the building, but somehow eluded capture despite the area being cordoned off by police.
Mulata, 32, was in good condition Monday before undergoing minor surgery to treat a shallow cut he received from the impact of one of the bullets, said John Muir Medical Center spokeswoman Sandra Ryan.
