WORLD : Veto Junk Fax Bill, Bush Advised
President Bush has been advised to veto legislation that would ban the use of facsimile machines and automatic dialer recorded message players for unsolicited advertising, a spokeswoman said today.
White House Deputy Press Secretary Alixe Glen, responding to approval late Monday by the House of such a measure, said Bush’s top advisers had recommended a presidential veto of the measure meant to provide relief for Americans annoyed by the computer-driven telephone calls and heaps of unwanted junk mail arriving over fax machines.
Similar legislation is pending in the Senate.
Administration opposition to the measure had been known, but today was the first time a veto threat was raised.
