Thirty-eight AIDS activists were arrested Tuesday after shouting protests and chanting at a meeting of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. Members of the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power/Los Angeles said they were protesting the supervisors’ refusal to increase this year’s proposed $60-million AIDS budget.

The demonstration began at 10 a.m. when protesters first applauded Supervisor Kenneth Hahn’s proposal to expand the board from five to seven members, then began shouting, “You are killing us!” Sheriff’s deputies wearing rubber gloves removed 26 men and 12 women from the Hall of Administration hearing room.

All 38 were booked on suspicion of creating a disburbance in a public meeting, a misdemeanor, and were expected to be released after receiving citations.
