Actor Emilio Estevez agrees that the movie Western “Young Guns,” dismissed by critics as a Brat Pack-on-horseback charade, was a career misstep.

So why the sequel “Young Guns 2” opening this week?

“I have been a fan of the Western movies since I was a little kid and I did ‘Young Guns’ in the hope that it would help bring back the Western,” Estevez, 27, said in an interview this week.

“John Fusco wrote a magnificent script, but then it was turned into what I call Hollywood’s first heavy-metal Western. It was just an excuse for a personality piece featuring all these young actors, and I was very disappointed.”

Fusco also wrote the script for the sequel, but this time there’s a different director and a bigger scope, Estevez said.

“This one has a wide-screen look with a big, glorious musical score, and the most accurate depiction of Billy the Kid of any film ever made on him,” he said.

“Young Guns 2” is the 43rd movie about the legendary gunman.
