Race to Set Sail

The 13th Annual Corinthian Classic Yacht Race will set sail Saturday at the Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard. A history-rich fleet of more than two dozen sailboats hailing from Moro Bay to San Diego will start the race at noon, just outside the breakwater. From the jettys at the harbor’s entrance, spectators will have a perfect view of the wooden schooners, ketches, yawls, sloops and cutters--all designed before 1952. Those interested will have the opportunity to inspect the vessels before the race by going to the Pacific Corinthian Yacht Club, 2600, S. Harbor Blvd., Oxnard. Viewing will also take place after the race, about 5 p.m.

Included in the roster is the 100-year-old schooner Los Amigos, which is locally owned; an 82-foot ketch that once ran secret military voyages in the South Pacific during World War II; and a 70-foot schooner from the 1930s, now based in Oxnard.

This is the fourth and last in a series of wooden boat races held on the West Coast this year.
