NATION : Suicide Attempt Ends in Rescue
A would-be suicide who changed her mind was rescued 30 yards from the brink of Niagara Falls by a tourist helicopter pilot, officials said today.
Rainbow Helicopter pilot and owner David Banks plucked Alice Goldman, 38, of Ontario from the Niagara River.
Niagara Parks police said they believe Goldman attempted suicide by jumping into the river from a pedestrian bridge on Grand Island on the American side of the falls.
She changed her mind once in the water but was unable to swim to shore, police said, so she grabbed some rocks about 30 yards from the brink.
Police called Banks who flew to the scene and hovered four feet above the river, allowing Goldman to grab the chopper’s landing struts so she could be lifted to shore.
Police said Goldman was taken to Niagara Falls Memorial Hospital for psychiatric evaluation.
